WEEK 2: Do Good Project Proposal

Date: 14 November 2023
*Note: This class officially starts at Week 2.

Do Good Project:
The core of the Do Good Project is about taking a risk to reveal new perspectives and creative ways to provide significant value that has a long-lasting effect on society. As a responsible designer, my priority is to generate creative ideas that genuinely contribute to the community's well-being. As I embark on this journey, I will be documenting all of my process for this project in this blog using my unique interests, skillsets, and aspirations to effect positive change.

Learning Plan:
I started off by creating my self-determined learning plan for this project to help me narrow down the direction I'm interested in my learning process. In this project, I am looking forward to improve my skills in UI/UX design area because of my growing interest towards it. Hence, I begin my learning plan 'Phase 1' by listing out all the areas that I am intended to learn in UI/UX design.

Topic Ideation:
When I began the ideation phase for my project, I already have a topic in my mind that I wanted to address in this project which is related to grief. Last year, I personally had a bad experience with grief where I had to deal with the loss of three loved ones that I held very close to my heart, in a span of one year. It was devastating phase to live as it was my first time experiencing grief, and to lost three important souls consecutively is a total nightmare.

I've been there (honestly, I think I am still there) and I've also seen some of my relatives who had it even more worse than me. At that time, I was thinking, 'What could have we done to make this intense journey a little bit better for us?'. When I sit down and think about it again, I realised that there is not enough resources for people who are going through them especially for young individuals. There is nothing much for us to do in order to ease our pain.

Hence, I researched more about grief through statistics to learn about general information about people who went through grief. Then, I used 'The 5 Whys' technique that had been introduced by one of my lecturer, Louise, to continue on my topic ideation. I decided to use Figjam (in Figma) for my brainstorming sessions in order for me to be more productive with its tool.

Brainstorming from my Figjam.

Based on WebMD survey in 2019, half of all participants were engaged in bad coping mechanisms while grieving. This happens because of their grief was not being recognized properly. A brief solution that I could think at the moment was to provide a comfort digital space for the grievers in order to cope with their grief without harming themselves.

Feedback:
For the learning plan, the lecturer had gave me more insight on how to make a better learning plan. The learning plan that I had shown to him was too general - I need to think on what do I want to learn that could have more possible outcome and learning opportunities? What do I actually want to achieve in UI/UX design?

For the topic ideation, the lecturer had mentioned to dive a little more deeper into the problem. He had highlighted some keywords such as bad cope mechanism, distraction and acceptance. I should find out more about why do people ended up involved in unhealthy coping mechanism. He also mentioned that I can start on thinking of ideas on how to combat this problem - what are the contents that I want to provide? Some work examples had been mentioned by him for me to explore and learn more about it.

For my personal feedback after the consultation and talking to my friends, I need to find if there are other ways to solve the problems encountered by the grievers. This is to avoid from limiting myself to UI/UX design while brainstorming ideas.
