WEEK 3: Do Good Project Proposal

 Date: 21 November 2023

Learning Plan:
I have made some amendments to my learning plan by mentioning that I want to learn how to apply 3D in my UI/UX design. This is because I had never used any 3D assets inside any of my UI/UX assignments before and I would like to learn on how to do it. I also come across a new 3D software that is in current trend among UI/UX designer called Spline. It's a recommended software as it can be integrated in Figma and turned into an interactable asset. As my 3D modelling skills is average, I think this would be a good opportunity for me to learn more about it.

I also mention that I want to consider to go for motion graphics as it is something that is outside of my comfort zone. I would like to try and use motion graphics to convey contents and messages of my topics to the audiences.

Brainstorming Ideas:
Based on last week's feedbacks, I started by researching more general information about grief and how it affects people through statistics. There are some of useful findings that I had found:

I had also found some visuals that is related to grief for my reference in order to brainstorm my ideas for the contents of this project. I found that most of the visuals has a very deep meaning behind it and a lot of symbolisation are expressed in abstract manner. I had also considered on finding some good motion graphics as I was considering to also go for motion graphics.

For case studies, I managed to find some of good UI/UX design case studies that is related to grieve. However, it is quite challenging because not a lot of people actually try to tackle this issue. Moreover, some of the case studies that I managed to find only has visuals and doesn't have much context into it. Hence, I decided to choose 3 case studies that will be the main for my references for this project and will be included in my project proposal, which is Furever, TRACES and The COVID Memorial.

Case Study #1:

Furever is a mobile app designed to connect and support grieving pet owners.

Furever focuses on a problem that faces by pet owners, which is them struggling to find support to help them cope with their loss.

This app provides on social support for recovery during the pet grieving process. They have three key features which is creating virtual memorial, connecting with pet owners by visiting their memorials, and joining online community to seek for emotional support.

Case Study #2:

TRACES is a digital app that supports people who experienced loss.

TRACES focuses on individuals who want to get closure while preserving the memory of their loss ones.

This app lets user to commemorating the people that they lost by creating a ‘story’ when they can share the details and memories associated with that person with other people. Other than that, this app also provide a journal where users can document personal memories of that person.

Case Study #3:

The COVID Memorial is a webpage to put a face and story to every number, and to commemorate all those who have sadly lost their lives due to the pandemic, either directly or indirectly.

They focused on the people who lost their loved ones to COVID and allow them to share their story as part of this global memorial and ensure future generations remember the people and not just the numbers.

In the memorial, they can share a picture of that person and basic details of them. Then, they can add comments to their own memorial or other’s.

Once I finished on exploring ideas and find inspirations from the references and case study, I began to brainstorm my ideas for this project. I created a total of 3 ideas that could potentially be the content of this project. Two of the ideas are UI/UX design, and another one is motion graphics. For each ideas, I included what is the concept/idea behind it, how it works and how it can helps the users.

My thoughts while I'm writing all these ideas is that I was concerned if any of these ideas is good enough to be considered as a standalone idea. I was not sure if it was solid idea or not, so there's a lot of time where I was considering to get rid of it or change and redo the whole concept of it. However, after asking my friends about their opinions, I decided to keep it for the consultation and see what insights I could get from it.

Feedback:
The lecturer mentioned that CAPSOUL is a nice concept and has the most potential out of the three ideas. After I expressed my concern about my ideas, he mentioned that it's better for me to talk to people and find out what are their user needs. Because for now, CAPSOUL only has one feature and it might not be enough for the users to keep on using the app. I need to think of more features that can cater to all user needs instead of focusing on one user need. He also mentioned that the first idea and third idea could be combined together. Hence, this is a sign that I should be focusing on my first idea and extend more from there.

For my learning plan, he mentioned that UI/UX design seems to be the best way to combat this issue. If we take a look at motion graphics, it's approach is more passive and short term. It might not give much impact to the users compared to UI/UX design. After getting insights from my lecturer, I've finally set my direction towards UI/UX design.
